Catheter Tube Holders

Definition : Devices designed to hold an externally inserted catheter tube and securely attach it to the anatomy of a patient, frequently supporting and/or securing the catheter tube during the whole catheterization procedure. Catheter tube holders are usually shaped specifically to the anatomical part where they are attached and/or the catheter tube that they are holding (e.g., endotracheal tube, nasogastric tube, urinary catheter tube, biliary catheter tube). They are usually made of plastic, glass, fabric, wood, metal or a combination of these materials. They also include some type of locking mechanism that attaches to the portion of the catheter tube that is external to the patient, as well as sections (e.g., wings, straps) that are coated with adhesive or other attachment mechanisms (e.g., hook-and-loop closures [Velcro]) that can be used to attach the holder to the patient's anatomy.
