Exploratory Probes, Eye, Lacrimal

Definition : Exploratory eye probes designed for introduction into the lacrimal passages that are intended mainly for exploratory purposes. These probes typically consist of slender flexible metal or plastic cylinders with that can be passed through the lacrimal duct. They may be attached to a handle at the proximal end. They can be flexible or rigid. Some lacrimal probes have rods of differing diameter attached coaxially to each end of a flat, narrow holding member (e.g., Bowman's Probe). Lacrimal exploratory probes and sounds are used in probing the lumen of the lacrimal passages, to dilate and correct defects of lacrimal ducts; they may be double-ended or one-sided.
