Definition : Data management information systems designed to provide up-to-date patient information during critical care. These systems typically consist of a combination of hardware and software. The hardware typically includes dedicated network servers and computers; the software consists of a dedicated software package that can integrate data across the entire critical care process including vital signs, fluid intake and output, medications, laboratory data, and doctor's orders. Critical care information management systems support intensive care units, facilitating clinical decisions by making all the information quickly available to the clinician. The system may function as stand-alone systems or may be integrated in a hospital-wide data management information system network.
