Orthopedic Rod Implants, Scoliosis

Definition : Orthopedic implant designed as a solid rod that is surgically inserted in the lower spine to reshape spinal vertebrae that have lateral angular deformation from the normal vertical line (i.e., scoliosis). These implants are straight metal (e.g., stainless steel, titanium) rods that are surgically inserted and fixed along the spine to hold the vertebrae and avoid further deviation. One or two rods are usually implanted in patients, mainly children, diagnosed with scoliosis. Also available are dedicated implanted rods that can be mechanically elongated every several months using surgical procedures and externally controlled magnetic rods to perform distraction of the vertebrae.
