Prostheses, Intervertebral Disk

Definition : Prostheses designed for total or partial replacement of the natural disk between two spinal vertebrae (i.e., the intervertebral disk). These prostheses typically consist of a set of components available in different configurations and materials (e.g., metallic, polymeric, or combinations of them). Intervertebral disk prostheses are used mainly in patients with degenerative disk disease (DDD), frequently as an alternative to spinal fusion surgery.
