Simulators, Bio-Acoustic

Definition : Simulators designed for periodic biological audiometer calibration checks without the involvement of human listeners. These simulators typically consist of tabletop or portable, electrically (e.g., battery) powered devices capable of testing continuous or intermittent sound levels in a frequency range from 125 Hz to 8 kHz, usually from standard earphones. The simulator includes sound to electrical transducers (i.e., microphones), electronic circuits, and controls; some devices also include a display. Bioacoustic simulators are intended to check (typically daily) the appropriate calibration of manual and/or automated audiometers following a given standard (e.g., OSHA, FDA). Some devices may also measure background noise in the environment (e.g., inside an audiometric booth). Bioacoustic simulators are not intended for the electroacoustic calibration of audiometers that is usually performed during preventive maintenance procedures or after a main repair procedure.
