Definition : Automatic electronic sphygmomanometers that measure the change in blood volume taking place in a single finger. Most of these instruments use a cuff wrapped around a finger; the cuff detects minute arterial volume changes in conjunction with an inflatable bladder which exerts pressure (counterpressure) just sufficient to equal the arterial pressure.
