Definition : Surgical retractors designed to temporarily separate and hold back the edges of an incision before and during the performance of an amputation, exposing and providing access to the segment of the bone to be resected. Amputation retractors usually consist of handheld, manual instruments with a split semi-spherical shape that includes removable or reversible handles at the opposite sides to facilitate its manipulation. Surgical amputation retractors are used in procedures of limb amputation.
