Definition : Biological cardiac valve prostheses manufactured using leaflets made of biological tissue. These prostheses include leaflets made of sterilized tissue (usually the pericardial sac) harvested from bovine (i.e., cows) or equine (i.e., horse) animals and chemically processed; the leaflets are sewn into a metal frame stent. Tissue leaflet biological prostheses are available in several sizes and types, depending on the cardiac valve to be replaced or repaired (e.g., mitral, aortic, or pulmonary) and the anatomic characteristics of the particular patient.
