Definition : Immunoassay reagents intended to perform qualitative and/or quantitative analyses on a body fluid sample (e.g., serum) to determine pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A), a protein mostly produced by the placenta in pregnant women. PAPP-A levels are elevated in maternal serum in trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) pregnancies and in degenerated or abnormal development of fertilized ova (i.e., molar pregnancy); a low level in the second trimester of pregnancy is associated with trisomy 18.
