Burs, Surgical, Middle Ear, Polishing

Definition : Middle-ear surgical burs designed for polishing and shaping of bone tissue. These burs typically consist of a shank made of steel or tungsten carbide with a well-differentiated working head (frequently with a diamond coating) with an appropriate shape (e.g., round) and size on the distal end; a tapered, notched, or elongated proximal end to fit into the rotary device; and a neck that connects the shank to the working part. Polishing middle-ear burs are used in a variety of procedures (e.g., repair of middle-ear ossicles); they are usually intended for reuse after sterilization, but disposable (single use) devices are also available.
