Analyzers, Physiologic, Peristaltic Motility/Gastric Accommodation, Barostatic

Definition : Physiologic analyzers designed to determine gastric accommodation and/or peristaltic motility in some part of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, including the esophagus, stomach, and the small and/or large intestines. These analyzers typically consist of catheters with one or more balloons that are inflated and/or deflated to maintain constant pressure inside the GI tract and an external electronic unit that regulates the balloon pressure by providing insufflation through the catheter, monitors the balloon pressure, displays and/or records the results, and processes the data to assess the accommodation response and/or motility of the GI tract segment. Barostatic GI analyzers are intended for the determination of pressure, motility, accommodation, sensations, and pain thresholds in a section of the GI tract (e.g., colon) and to evaluate several conditions and/or diseases in the stomach and small intestine, such as proximal gastric motility and accommodation response after meals.
